The Situation

Your new boss is Rep. Angelica Hewes (I-UDC), a veteran member of the U.S. House of Representatives. She is worried that she will face a much younger challenger in her next election and wants to improve how she is viewed in relation to privacy and technology policy. Therefore, she hired your small team of internet-savvy Zoomers to assist her, starting with the right to be forgotten.

You just finished 3 days of paperwork, fingerprinting, iris and retina scanning, and drug testing. Now you are a bona fide employee of the U.S. Congress, and you actually say, "I'm from the government, and I am here to help you." You'll be welcome in every home and invited to the best parties.

Now it is time to get to work . . .

You just met with Hamish Ovechkin—his mom's Scottish and his dad loves the Capitals so much he changed his last name. Hamish explained that during a recent trip to Europe, Rep. Hewes heard about the right to be forgotten and wants to learn more about it. She needs to decide whether to support bringing the right to be forgotten to the United States. She believes this will be a key issue in her next campaign and will show she is tech savvy and knows online privacy issues.

You and your colleagues have been hired as a special internet team (or "SpIT") to research the right to be forgotten, educate Rep. Hewes, and recommend the position she should take on the issue. You will create a concept map about the issue, write a short briefing paper for Rep. Hewes, and create an ad to run at bus stops in Rep. Hewes' district, which has the most bus riders per square mile in the United States (but is third in the world).

For Operation Lethe, the three projects will be group grades and there is an individual grade based on contributions to the team and the final reflection. See the rubrics on the Operation Lethe: Evaluation page

Now watch some more of Google's right-to-be-forgotten explainer video beginning at 4:57 through the end. (You can skip the boring stuff from 2:18 to 4:56 that not every member of SpIT needs to know.)

Then play Google's right-to-be-forgotten game (#1) and see if you can get the right answers, or at least the answers Google has decided are correct.

Task - middle

Before moving on to the detailed instructions,

one last background video—a TED Talk from an Aussie.

Now you are ready to dive into the assignment. What you need to do is detailed on the Process page. Please read the directions carefully and reach out to the Chief of Staff with any questions. No question is too small.

(While the members of the SpIT squad play the debonair, James Bond-esque roles of congressional aides, your teacher will play the dual roles of Rep. Hewes and Chief of Staff Ovechkin, which are more like Ms. Moneypenny—still glamorous, but less exciting.)
